Matter

The cross-ecosystem application standard from Apple, Google, Amazon and Samsung.

Matter is not another radio — it is the application layer the big four ecosystems (Apple Home, Amazon Alexa, Google Home, Samsung SmartThings) agreed to share. A certified device carries a QR code; scan it and the device joins Apple Home, Alexa, Google Home or SmartThings — or several of them at the same time, which no proprietary integration ever offered. Control runs locally over your LAN rather than through a vendor cloud.

Under the hood it rides existing transports: Wi-Fi or Ethernet for mains-powered devices, Thread for battery ones. Older radio fleets are not locked out either — a Hue or Aqara hub acts as a Matter bridge and presents its Zigbee devices to any Matter ecosystem.

The honest caveat in 2026: device-type coverage still trails the native integrations. Core categories — lights, plugs, sensors, locks, thermostats — work well, but newer or vendor-specific features often still need the maker's own app, and camera support remains uneven across ecosystems.

Matter at a glance

AttributeMatter
What it isApplication layer over IP — not a radio; runs on Wi-Fi, Ethernet and Thread
Standard & since2022 (Matter 1.0) — Connectivity Standards Alliance, backed by Apple, Google, Amazon and Samsung; updated roughly twice a year since
Radio / mediumNone of its own — Wi-Fi or Ethernet for powered devices, Thread for battery devices; Bluetooth LE only for setup
Network topologyWhatever the transport provides (Wi-Fi star, Thread mesh); control stays local on your LAN
Data rateInherited from the transport
Typical indoor rangeInherited from the transport
Practical network sizeBounded by the transport and controller, not by Matter itself
Battery devicesVia Thread — Matter-over-Wi-Fi is for mains-powered devices
Required hardwareA controller from any ecosystem: Apple TV/HomePod, Echo, Nest hub or speaker, or a SmartThings hub; Thread devices also need a border router
Cross-brand interoperabilityThe whole point — one certified device works in every Matter ecosystem, even several at once (multi-admin)
Matter statusIs Matter
Typical devicesBulbs, plugs, sensors, locks and thermostats from Matter-certified lines (Tapo, Nanoleaf, Eve, Aqara, Kasa)
Device costSet by the radio underneath — Wi-Fi Matter plugs from ~$10–20, Thread devices more
