Zigbee
The high-volume, low-cost mesh radio behind Hue, IKEA and Aqara.
Zigbee is the workhorse mesh protocol of the smart home. Built on the IEEE 802.15.4 radio standard and run by the Connectivity Standards Alliance (the body that also runs Matter), it powers the device fleets of Philips Hue, IKEA, Aqara, Sonoff and most budget sensor brands. Devices form a mesh: anything mains-powered — a bulb, a plug — relays traffic for battery devices, so coverage grows with the network.
Every Zigbee network needs one coordinator (a hub or USB stick). That is both its weakness — the coordinator is a single point of failure, and moving to a new hub means re-pairing — and its strength, because coordinators are everywhere: a Hue Bridge, an Aqara or SmartThings hub, several Amazon Echo models, or a $20 dongle on Home Assistant.
Zigbee at a glance
| Attribute | Zigbee |
|---|---|
| What it is | Low-power mesh radio protocol (IEEE 802.15.4) with its own application profiles |
| Standard & since | 2004 — Zigbee Alliance, now the Connectivity Standards Alliance (CSA); Zigbee 3.0 unified the profiles in 2016 |
| Radio / medium | 2.4 GHz worldwide (channels 11–26); shares the band with Wi-Fi and Bluetooth |
| Network topology | Mesh — mains-powered devices (bulbs, plugs) route for the others; one coordinator per network |
| Data rate | 250 kbit/s |
| Typical indoor range | ~10–20 m per hop; the mesh extends coverage with every mains-powered device |
| Practical network size | Hundreds of devices on a good coordinator (65,000+ in theory) |
| Battery devices | Excellent — sensors run 1–2+ years on a coin cell |
| Required hardware | A Zigbee coordinator: Hue Bridge, Aqara or SmartThings hub, some Echo speakers, or a USB stick on Home Assistant |
| Cross-brand interoperability | Good since Zigbee 3.0, with vendor quirks — some brands gate features behind their own hub |
| Matter status | Bridged — Hue, Aqara and SwitchBot hubs expose their Zigbee devices to Matter |
| Typical devices | Bulbs, buttons, door/window and motion sensors, plugs (Hue, IKEA, Aqara, Sonoff) |
| Device cost | Lowest of the mesh protocols — sensors from ~$10–15 |
