Matter vs Zigbee
Matter and Zigbee are different layers, not direct rivals: what each actually standardizes, how Zigbee devices join Matter through bridges, and whether to buy Matter-native or Zigbee in 2026.
This comparison is really a category error worth untangling: Zigbee is a radio mesh with its own application profiles, while Matter is an application layer that runs over Wi-Fi, Ethernet and Thread — Matter does not run over Zigbee radios at all. The buying question underneath is real, though: for your next bulb or sensor, do you buy Matter-native, or Zigbee behind a hub?
The two even share a steward — the Connectivity Standards Alliance runs both — which is why the bridge story is deliberate: a Hue or Aqara hub presents its whole Zigbee fleet to any Matter ecosystem.

The verdict
Buy Matter-native when starting fresh on Alexa, Google Home, Apple Home or SmartThings and the device type is one of Matter's solid categories — you keep multi-admin, local control and the freedom to switch ecosystems. Buy Zigbee when volume and price rule: a houseful of sensors and bulbs still costs meaningfully less as Zigbee, and behind a Hue or Aqara bridge it shows up in Matter anyway — the practical best of both.

- Does Matter make Zigbee obsolete?
- No. Matter cannot use Zigbee radios directly, but it embraced Zigbee via bridges: hubs from Hue, Aqara and SwitchBot expose their Zigbee devices to every Matter ecosystem. Zigbee remains the volume/price leader for sensors and bulbs, so the two will coexist for years.
- Can a Zigbee device join Matter directly?
- Not over its own radio. It joins through a Matter bridge — the manufacturer's hub speaks Matter on the device's behalf. The device keeps working exactly as before; the bridge is what the ecosystems see.
