Zigbee and Z-Wave are the two classic smart-home mesh protocols, and the choice between them is the oldest question in home automation. Both are low-power radio meshes that need a hub, both run sensors for years on a coin cell, and both predate Matter by two decades. They differ where it is hard to see on a product page: radio band, certification policy, catalogue and price.

The verdict

Zigbee wins on price and selection — it is the volume protocol behind Hue, IKEA and Aqara, and its hubs (or a $20 dongle) are everywhere. Z-Wave wins on radio physics and certainty: sub-GHz reaches through walls that stop 2.4 GHz cold, it never fights your Wi-Fi, and mandatory certification means cross-brand pairing is a guarantee, which is why locks and security gear favour it.

In the Matter era the tiebreaker has shifted: Zigbee fleets ride into Matter on bridges you may already own (Hue, Aqara), while Z-Wave's modern answer is a hub that represents it. Building fresh on a mainstream ecosystem, Zigbee (or Thread) is the default; pick Z-Wave deliberately, for locks, difficult walls, or a Home Assistant/Hubitat/Ring setup.

FAQ

Can Zigbee and Z-Wave work together in one home?
Not over the air — they are different radios on different bands. But one controller can run both networks side by side: Home Assistant with two USB sticks (or a combo stick), Hubitat, and older SmartThings hubs all do it, and at the automation layer the devices mix freely.
Which handles Wi-Fi interference better?
Z-Wave, by design: it runs sub-GHz (908/868 MHz) and never shares the 2.4 GHz band. Zigbee coexists with Wi-Fi fine in most homes, but its channel should sit away from your access points' channels.
Which is more future-proof in the Matter era?
Zigbee has the cleaner story: Hue, Aqara and SwitchBot hubs already bridge Zigbee devices into Matter. Z-Wave has no announced native path, so its future in multi-ecosystem homes runs through hubs that speak Matter on its behalf — workable, but one layer removed.
