Z-Wave
The strictly-certified sub-GHz mesh, strongest in locks and security.
Z-Wave is the other classic smart-home mesh, and it made the opposite trade to Zigbee on almost every axis. It runs sub-GHz (908.42 MHz in the US, 868.42 MHz in Europe), so it never fights your Wi-Fi and reaches further through walls — at the price of region-locked hardware and a smaller, dearer device catalogue.
Its defining feature is certification: every Z-Wave device on the market passed a mandatory interoperability programme, and new chips remain backward compatible with devices from two decades ago. That is why it remains the protocol of choice for security systems and door locks — Ring Alarm runs on it, and professional installers still reach for it when "it pairs" has to be a guarantee rather than a probability.
