Thread
The IP-native mesh radio that Matter prefers for battery devices.
Thread takes Zigbee's radio (IEEE 802.15.4) and swaps its bespoke networking for IPv6: every Thread device is an IP node, reachable through a border router instead of translated by a hub. There is no single coordinator to fail or migrate away from — mains-powered devices are routers, and the mesh elects and replaces its own leader.
Thread deliberately stops at the network layer. The application layer on top is usually Matter ("Matter over Thread"), and before Matter it was Apple HomeKit — which is why Eve devices ran Thread years before Matter 1.0 shipped. If you own a recent Apple TV 4K, HomePod, 4th-generation Echo or Nest Hub, you already own a border router and Thread costs you no extra hardware at all.
Thread at a glance
| Attribute | Thread |
|---|---|
| What it is | Low-power IPv6 mesh network protocol (IEEE 802.15.4 radio, 6LoWPAN) |
| Standard & since | 2015 — Thread Group (Google/Nest, Apple, ARM, Samsung and others); Thread 1.4 (2024) smoothed multi-vendor networks |
| Radio / medium | 2.4 GHz (IEEE 802.15.4 — the same silicon family as Zigbee) |
| Network topology | Self-healing mesh with no fixed coordinator — routers elect a leader; border routers connect the mesh to your LAN |
| Data rate | 250 kbit/s |
| Typical indoor range | ~10–20 m per hop; mains-powered Thread devices extend the mesh |
| Practical network size | Hundreds of devices; grows by adding border routers and routers |
| Battery devices | Excellent — designed for years on a coin cell |
| Required hardware | A Thread border router — already inside Apple TV 4K, HomePod, Echo (4th gen+), Nest Hub (2nd gen) and SmartThings Station |
| Cross-brand interoperability | IP end-to-end; pairs with Matter as the application layer, so interop is Matter’s certification story |
| Matter status | First-class — "Matter over Thread" is the intended pairing for battery devices |
| Typical devices | Sensors, buttons, bulbs and plugs from Eve, Nanoleaf and Aqara’s newer lines |
| Device cost | Mid — mostly premium brands so far; prices falling as Matter spreads |
