Matter vs Thread
Matter and Thread are complementary layers, not competitors: Thread is the low-power mesh radio, Matter the application standard riding on it. What each does and what "Matter over Thread" means.
Matter and Thread appear on the same boxes and get confused constantly, but they are layers of one stack, not alternatives. Thread is the network: a low-power IPv6 mesh radio (IEEE 802.15.4). Matter is the application language spoken over a network — Thread, Wi-Fi or Ethernet. A battery sensor labelled "Matter over Thread" uses both at once, the way a website uses both HTTP and Wi-Fi.

The verdict
There is nothing to choose between them — the real choice is which transport your Matter device should use. Battery devices (sensors, buttons, some locks) belong on Thread: mesh reach and years of battery life, at the cost of needing a border router. Powered and bandwidth-hungry devices (plugs, appliances) do fine as Matter over Wi-Fi with no extra hardware. Check the box: "Matter over Thread" and "Matter over Wi-Fi" are different purchases with different requirements.
Which to choose
Choose Thread when
- Battery devices: sensors, buttons, locks
- You own a border router already (Apple TV 4K, HomePod, Echo 4th gen+, Nest Hub 2nd gen)
- You want mesh coverage that grows with each powered device
Choose Matter when
- It is not either/or — Matter is the application layer on top
- For mains-powered devices, Matter over Wi-Fi needs no border router
- Look for the Matter logo first, then pick the transport per device
FAQ
- Do I need Thread to use Matter?
- No — Matter runs over Wi-Fi and Ethernet too, and most Matter plugs and bulbs are Wi-Fi. Thread is the preferred transport for battery devices, where Wi-Fi's power draw is unworkable.
- Do I need a Thread border router for Matter over Thread?
- Yes, at least one. You may own one already: Apple TV 4K, HomePod (mini or 2nd gen), Echo (4th gen and newer) and Nest Hub (2nd gen) all include a border router. Home Assistant needs one added — a Connect ZBT-1 stick, or any of the devices above on the same LAN.
- Can a Thread device work without Matter?
- Yes. Thread carries other application layers too — Apple HomeKit ran over Thread before Matter existed, which is how early Eve devices worked. Today new Thread devices almost always speak Matter.
