2. Device categories

What you own

Samsung SmartThings

Matter controller: yes. “Connect Matter Devices with SmartThings” — partners.smartthings.com

Matter version: 1.5. “first global smart home platform to support Matter-compatible cameras” — blog.smartthings.com

Zigbee radio: Aeotec Smart Home Hub (up to 100 Zigbee devices), Aeotec Smart Home Hub 2 (Zigbee 3.0, up to 150 devices). “up to 100 Zigbee certified devices” — aeotec.com

Z-Wave radio: Aeotec Smart Home Hub (up to 100 Z-Wave devices, S2). “up to 100 Z-Wave devices” — aeotec.com

Matter device types: 32 listed

Listed: cooktops, dishwashers, dryers, washers, ovens, microwaves, refrigerators, room air conditioners, extractor hoods, temperature-controlled cabinets, battery storage, heat pumps, solar power devices, water heaters, lights (on/off, dimming, color, color temperature), plug-in units, mounted load controls, pumps, water valves, sensors (air quality, contact, humidity, light, occupancy, pressure, rain, smoke/CO, temperature, water freeze, water leak), air purifiers, basic video players, door locks, EV supply equipment, fans, generic switches, Matter bridges, robotic vacuum cleaners, speakers, thermostats, window coverings, cameras (Matter 1.5). “Energy management: battery storage, heat pumps, solar power” — partners.smartthings.com

Matter devices need a SmartThings hub: a stand-alone hub or one built into recent Samsung TVs, Smart Monitors, Family Hub refrigerators, SmartThings Station and some soundbars (partners.smartthings.com). Matter cameras launched on Aeotec Smart Home Hub 2, Aeotec Smart Home Hub, SmartThings Hub 2018 and ThingsOne (blog.smartthings.com).

Matter over Thread or over Wi-Fi?

Matter devices connect over Wi-Fi or Thread. A Wi-Fi device joins your router and needs nothing else. A Thread device needs a Thread border router on the same network. “The first specification release of the Matter protocol will run on Wi-Fi and Thread network layers and will use Bluetooth Low Energy for commissioning.” — csa-iot.org

Samsung SmartThings: the border router is built into Aeotec Smart Home Hub (SmartThings Hub v3), Aeotec Smart Home Hub 2. Own one of them and Thread devices need nothing extra. “border router in the Smart Home Thread network” — aeotec.com

Zigbee and Z-Wave gear

Zigbee devices reach a Matter ecosystem through a bridge that exposes them as Matter devices, or through a hub with its own Zigbee radio (Samsung SmartThings, see above).

  • Philips Hue Bridge / Bridge Pro$79.99

Matter bridge for zigbee. Limits: Play HDMI sync box not via Matter; Tap dial switch dial not via Matter; Bluetooth-only connected products cannot use Matter. “Bridge has been updated to support Matter” — philips-hue.com

  • Aqara Hub M3$159.99

Matter bridge for zigbee, infrared (one AC unit); Thread border router. Limits: Not all Aqara Zigbee devices can be bridged to Matter (aqara.com). “exposes existing Aqara Zigbee devices to Matter-compatible apps” — us.aqara.com

  • Aqara Hub M2—

Matter bridge for zigbee. Limits: Enabled via 'Bind to Matter (Beta)' in hub settings; firmware 'will NOT upgrade Zigbee devices to Thread'. “Add Matter support of 40+ Aqara Zigbee devices” — aqara.com

  • IKEA DIRIGERA hub$139.99

Matter bridge for zigbee; Thread border router. “DIRIGERA hub is a Matter bridge.” — ikea.com

  • SwitchBot Hub 2$69.99

Matter bridge for bluetooth (SwitchBot devices), infrared. Limits: Six SwitchBot secondary devices plus the hub's own temperature and humidity (8 total); Lock, Curtain, Blind Tilt, Bot, Motion Sensor, Contact Sensor exposed via Matter (switch-bot.com). “will all now work together to support Matter” — blog.switch-bot.com

  • Tuya / Smart Life Matter gateways (e.g. MOES Matter Zigbee gateway, Immax NEO Bridge)—

Matter bridge for zigbee; Thread border router. “Zigbee sub-devices bridged to Matter” — developer.tuya.com

Z-Wave to Matter bridge: none found; Aeotec's newest hub, Smart Home Hub 2, lists Matter, Thread and Zigbee 3.0 but not Z-Wave. Z-Wave devices need a hub with a Z-Wave radio (Samsung SmartThings, see above). Checked at aeotec.com
