Wi-Fi
No hub, big bandwidth — the default for cameras and cheap plugs.
Wi-Fi is the protocol you already have, which is precisely its pitch: a Wi-Fi plug or camera joins your network like a laptop does, with no hub, no coordinator and no border router. It is also the only mainstream choice with the bandwidth for video, so cameras and doorbells are Wi-Fi almost without exception.
The trade-offs are power and coordination. The radio is hungry — there are no multi-year coin-cell Wi-Fi sensors — and each brand historically brought its own cloud and app, so a Wi-Fi-heavy home became a folder of vendor apps. Matter over Wi-Fi resolves the app-silo problem for core device types, and is the label to look for on new Wi-Fi gear. Watch your router too: a fleet of cheap plugs can exhaust a budget router's client capacity well before the Wi-Fi spectrum itself runs out.
