What you own

Home Assistant

Matter controller: yes. “meaning that it can control Matter-based devices” — home-assistant.io

Matter version: 1.6. “Supports Matter 1.6.0” — github.com

Zigbee radio: Home Assistant Yellow (built-in Zigbee radio), Connect ZBT-2 USB (recommended for new networks), Connect ZBT-1 USB (discontinued, still supported). “Home Assistant Green does not have a built-in Zigbee radio.” — home-assistant.io

Z-Wave radio: Home Assistant Connect ZWA-2 (Z-Wave and Z-Wave Long Range, 800-series, MSRP $69). “Run both your Z-Wave and Z-Wave Long Range networks simultaneously” — home-assistant.io

Matter device types: 9 listed, 1 not listed or partial

Listed: light, lock, cover, climate, switch, sensor, update, vacuum, bridges (bridged devices appear as devices). “Light, Lock, Cover, Climate, Switch, Sensor, Update, and Vacuum” — home-assistant.io

Not listed or partial: cameras, doorbells, closures: server supports 1.5.1 but frontend support still being built.

Needs the official Matter Server app on Home Assistant OS (not on 32-bit systems). It accepts the Thread border routers of other ecosystems (Nest Hub 2nd gen, Nest Wifi Pro, HomePod mini or 2nd gen, Apple TV 4K) or its own OpenThread Border Router app on a Connect ZBT-1, ZBT-2 or SkyConnect. Home Assistant Green ($199) has no radio of its own (home-assistant.io); a Connect ZBT-2 ($49) runs Zigbee or Thread, not both at once (home-assistant.io).

Matter over Thread or over Wi-Fi?

Matter devices connect over Wi-Fi or Thread. A Wi-Fi device joins your router and needs nothing else. A Thread device needs a Thread border router on the same network. “The first specification release of the Matter protocol will run on Wi-Fi and Thread network layers and will use Bluetooth Low Energy for commissioning.” — csa-iot.org

Home Assistant has no border router built in. For Thread devices add one of: Home Assistant Connect ZBT-1 (Thread firmware), Home Assistant Connect ZBT-2 (Thread firmware), Home Assistant Yellow (built-in radio, Thread firmware), any Home Assistant OS hub (Green, Yellow, Raspberry Pi) with a Thread adapter and the OpenThread Border Router app. “install the OpenThread firmware on the adapter” — home-assistant.io

Zigbee and Z-Wave gear

Zigbee devices reach a Matter ecosystem through a bridge that exposes them as Matter devices, or through a hub with its own Zigbee radio (Home Assistant, see above).

  • Philips Hue Bridge / Bridge Pro$79.99

Matter bridge for zigbee. Limits: Play HDMI sync box not via Matter; Tap dial switch dial not via Matter; Bluetooth-only connected products cannot use Matter. “Bridge has been updated to support Matter” — philips-hue.com

  • Aqara Hub M3$159.99

Matter bridge for zigbee, infrared (one AC unit); Thread border router. Limits: Not all Aqara Zigbee devices can be bridged to Matter (aqara.com). “exposes existing Aqara Zigbee devices to Matter-compatible apps” — us.aqara.com

  • Aqara Hub M2—

Matter bridge for zigbee. Limits: Enabled via 'Bind to Matter (Beta)' in hub settings; firmware 'will NOT upgrade Zigbee devices to Thread'. “Add Matter support of 40+ Aqara Zigbee devices” — aqara.com

  • IKEA DIRIGERA hub$139.99

Matter bridge for zigbee; Thread border router. “DIRIGERA hub is a Matter bridge.” — ikea.com

  • SwitchBot Hub 2$69.99

Matter bridge for bluetooth (SwitchBot devices), infrared. Limits: Six SwitchBot secondary devices plus the hub's own temperature and humidity (8 total); Lock, Curtain, Blind Tilt, Bot, Motion Sensor, Contact Sensor exposed via Matter (switch-bot.com). “will all now work together to support Matter” — blog.switch-bot.com

  • Tuya / Smart Life Matter gateways (e.g. MOES Matter Zigbee gateway, Immax NEO Bridge)—

Matter bridge for zigbee; Thread border router. “Zigbee sub-devices bridged to Matter” — developer.tuya.com

Z-Wave to Matter bridge: none found; Aeotec's newest hub, Smart Home Hub 2, lists Matter, Thread and Zigbee 3.0 but not Z-Wave. Z-Wave devices need a hub with a Z-Wave radio (Home Assistant, see above). Checked at aeotec.com
