What you own

Google Home

Matter controller: yes. “Prepare your smart home for Matter” — support.google.com

Matter version: not published; table lists per device type the spec version it came from, up to 1.3 (Doorbell, Chime, Electric Meter). Checked at developers.home.google.com

Zigbee radio: none; Google hub list names only Wi-Fi and Thread radios. Checked at support.google.com

Z-Wave radio: none; no Z-Wave radio named. Checked at support.google.com

Matter device types: 22 listed, 6 not listed or partial

Listed: on/off, dimmable, color temperature and extended color lights, on/off plug-in unit, on/off light switch, door lock, thermostat, window covering, fan, air purifier, air quality sensor, carbon monoxide detector, smoke detector, contact, occupancy, temperature, humidity, light, pressure, flow sensors, pump, speaker, dishwasher, laundry washer, robot vacuum cleaner, doorbell, chime, electric meter, electric utility meter, electrical energy tariff. “not all are fully supported” — developers.home.google.com

Not listed or partial: on/off light switch: can only be commissioned and deleted, no binding, door locks: remote and voice unlock disabled without PIN, cameras: not listed, EV chargers: not listed, refrigerators, ovens, dryers: not listed, device types not listed are not officially supported.

A Thread-capable hub is needed once devices mix Thread and Wi-Fi. A Matter bridge shows up as a Control Bridge device and its bridged devices appear as normal devices (developers.home.google.com).

Matter over Thread or over Wi-Fi?

Matter devices connect over Wi-Fi or Thread. A Wi-Fi device joins your router and needs nothing else. A Thread device needs a Thread border router on the same network. “The first specification release of the Matter protocol will run on Wi-Fi and Thread network layers and will use Bluetooth Low Energy for commissioning.” — csa-iot.org

Google Home: the border router is built into Google Home Speaker (2026), Nest Hub (2nd gen), Nest Hub Max, Nest Wifi Pro (Wi-Fi 6E), Google TV Streamer (4K). Own one of them and Thread devices need nothing extra. “Nest Hub (2nd gen), Nest Hub Max, Nest Wifi Pro” — support.google.com

Zigbee and Z-Wave gear

Zigbee devices reach a Matter ecosystem through a bridge that exposes them as Matter devices, or through a hub with its own Zigbee radio.

  • Philips Hue Bridge / Bridge Pro$79.99

Matter bridge for zigbee. Limits: Play HDMI sync box not via Matter; Tap dial switch dial not via Matter; Bluetooth-only connected products cannot use Matter. “Bridge has been updated to support Matter” — philips-hue.com

  • Aqara Hub M3$159.99

Matter bridge for zigbee, infrared (one AC unit); Thread border router. Limits: Not all Aqara Zigbee devices can be bridged to Matter (aqara.com). “exposes existing Aqara Zigbee devices to Matter-compatible apps” — us.aqara.com

  • Aqara Hub M2—

Matter bridge for zigbee. Limits: Enabled via 'Bind to Matter (Beta)' in hub settings; firmware 'will NOT upgrade Zigbee devices to Thread'. “Add Matter support of 40+ Aqara Zigbee devices” — aqara.com

  • Tuya / Smart Life Matter gateways (e.g. MOES Matter Zigbee gateway, Immax NEO Bridge)—

Matter bridge for zigbee; Thread border router. “Zigbee sub-devices bridged to Matter” — developer.tuya.com

Z-Wave to Matter bridge: none found; Aeotec's newest hub, Smart Home Hub 2, lists Matter, Thread and Zigbee 3.0 but not Z-Wave. Z-Wave devices need a hub with a Z-Wave radio. Checked at aeotec.com
