What you own

Apple Home

Matter controller: yes. “Pair and manage your Matter accessories” — support.apple.com

Matter version: not published; Apple names 1.4 only for Siri room-direction on robot vacuums. Checked at apple.com

Zigbee radio: none; Apple pages list only Wi-Fi and Thread; no Zigbee radio named. Checked at support.apple.com

Z-Wave radio: none; no Z-Wave radio named on any Apple page. Checked at support.apple.com

Matter device types: 10 listed, 6 not listed or partial

Listed: air conditioners, bridges, lights, locks, outlets, switches, thermostats, blinds and shades, sensors (motion, ambient light, contact, temperature, humidity), robot vacuum cleaners. “air conditioners, bridges, lights, locks, outlets, switches, thermostats” — support.apple.com

Not listed or partial: cameras, appliances, EV chargers, energy devices, fans, air purifiers.

Since iOS 18 the Home app adds and controls Matter accessories without a home hub, but Thread accessories need a Thread-enabled home hub (or an iPhone 15 Pro or later nearby). Remote access, sharing and automations need a home hub: HomePod, HomePod mini or Apple TV (support.apple.com).

Matter over Thread or over Wi-Fi?

Matter devices connect over Wi-Fi or Thread. A Wi-Fi device joins your router and needs nothing else. A Thread device needs a Thread border router on the same network. “The first specification release of the Matter protocol will run on Wi-Fi and Thread network layers and will use Bluetooth Low Energy for commissioning.” — csa-iot.org

Apple Home: the border router is built into HomePod mini, HomePod (2nd generation), Apple TV 4K (3rd generation) Wi-Fi + Ethernet. Own one of them and Thread devices need nothing extra. “such as Apple TV 4K, HomePod (2nd generation), HomePod mini” — support.apple.com

Zigbee and Z-Wave gear

Zigbee devices reach a Matter ecosystem through a bridge that exposes them as Matter devices, or through a hub with its own Zigbee radio.
