What you own

Amazon Alexa

Matter controller: yes. “The Echo device is the Matter administrator” — developer.amazon.com

Matter version: 1.5. “subset of Matter 1.5 and lower device types” — developer.amazon.com

Zigbee radio: Echo (4th Gen), Echo Dot Max (2025), Echo Hub, Echo Plus (2nd Gen), Echo Show 21, Echo Show 15 (2nd Gen), Echo Show 11 (2025), Echo Show 10 (3rd Gen), Echo Show 8 (3rd Gen, 2025), Echo Studio, eero 6 / 6+ / 7 / Beacon / Max 7 / Outdoor 7 / PoE 6 / PoE gateway / Pro / Pro 6 / Pro 6E / Pro 7. “support Zigbee 1.2 and 3.0” — developer.amazon.com

Z-Wave radio: none; Amazon lists Zigbee, Thread, Bluetooth, Matter only; no Z-Wave. Checked at developer.amazon.com

Matter device types: 22 listed, 3 not listed or partial

Listed: Matter hubs, on/off and dimmable lights and plugs, color lights, light strip, power strip, generic switch (button), air quality sensor, contact sensor, humidity sensor, light sensor, motion detector, smoke CO alarm, temperature sensor, water leak detector, door lock, window covering, thermostat, fan, air purifier, dishwasher, room air conditioner, robotic vacuum cleaner. “Matter Device Library Specification, Version 1.5” — developer.amazon.com

Not listed or partial: cameras: not listed, energy devices and EV chargers: not listed, refrigerators, ovens, washers, dryers: not listed.

A Matter-compatible Echo (or eero) is the Matter administrator and discovers devices locally; Echo Show 5, Echo Dot, Echo Flex, Echo Hub, Echo Studio and others are controllers but only the listed models are Thread border routers.

Matter over Thread or over Wi-Fi?

Matter devices connect over Wi-Fi or Thread. A Wi-Fi device joins your router and needs nothing else. A Thread device needs a Thread border router on the same network. “The first specification release of the Matter protocol will run on Wi-Fi and Thread network layers and will use Bluetooth Low Energy for commissioning.” — csa-iot.org

Amazon Alexa: the border router is built into Echo (4th Gen) [Thread 1.1], Echo Dot Max (2025), Echo Hub, Echo Plus (2nd Gen), Echo Show 21, Echo Show 15 (2nd Gen), Echo Show 11 (2025), Echo Show 10 (3rd Gen), Echo Show 8 (3rd Gen, 2025), Echo Studio (2025 and newer), several eero models [Thread 1.3]. Own one of them and Thread devices need nothing extra. “Matter over Wi-Fi and Matter over Thread” — developer.amazon.com

Zigbee and Z-Wave gear

Zigbee devices reach a Matter ecosystem through a bridge that exposes them as Matter devices, or through a hub with its own Zigbee radio (Amazon Alexa, see above).

  • Philips Hue Bridge / Bridge Pro$79.99

Matter bridge for zigbee. Limits: Play HDMI sync box not via Matter; Tap dial switch dial not via Matter; Bluetooth-only connected products cannot use Matter. “Bridge has been updated to support Matter” — philips-hue.com

  • Aqara Hub M3$159.99

Matter bridge for zigbee, infrared (one AC unit); Thread border router. Limits: Not all Aqara Zigbee devices can be bridged to Matter (aqara.com). “exposes existing Aqara Zigbee devices to Matter-compatible apps” — us.aqara.com

  • Aqara Hub M2—

Matter bridge for zigbee. Limits: Enabled via 'Bind to Matter (Beta)' in hub settings; firmware 'will NOT upgrade Zigbee devices to Thread'. “Add Matter support of 40+ Aqara Zigbee devices” — aqara.com

  • IKEA DIRIGERA hub$139.99

Matter bridge for zigbee; Thread border router. “DIRIGERA hub is a Matter bridge.” — ikea.com

  • SwitchBot Hub 2$69.99

Matter bridge for bluetooth (SwitchBot devices), infrared. Limits: Six SwitchBot secondary devices plus the hub's own temperature and humidity (8 total); Lock, Curtain, Blind Tilt, Bot, Motion Sensor, Contact Sensor exposed via Matter (switch-bot.com). “will all now work together to support Matter” — blog.switch-bot.com

  • Tuya / Smart Life Matter gateways (e.g. MOES Matter Zigbee gateway, Immax NEO Bridge)—

Matter bridge for zigbee; Thread border router. “Zigbee sub-devices bridged to Matter” — developer.tuya.com

Z-Wave to Matter bridge: none found; Aeotec's newest hub, Smart Home Hub 2, lists Matter, Thread and Zigbee 3.0 but not Z-Wave. Z-Wave devices need a hub with a Z-Wave radio. Checked at aeotec.com
