X10

The 1970s powerline original — historically important, legacy today.

X10 is where home automation started: designed in 1975 by Pico Electronics in Scotland and sold from 1978, it signals over the house wiring itself, injecting 120 kHz bursts at the zero crossing of the AC sine wave. Sixteen house codes times sixteen unit codes give 256 addresses; a command crawls out at roughly 20 bit/s, which is why an X10 lamp answers a beat after you press the button.

Its limits are structural, not fixable by newer modules: commands are mostly one-way and unacknowledged, dimmer and power-supply noise eats them, US split-phase homes need a phase coupler for signals to cross legs, and there is no authentication — a same-transformer neighbour on your house code can genuinely switch your lights. Insteon arrived in 2005 as the dual-band (powerline + RF) successor and inherited much of the user base; today the mesh radio protocols have replaced both for new installations.
