The Smart Home in 2017 and What to Expect in the Home Automation Industry

Throughout recent years, the smart home industry has been growing significantly. With that in mind, we’ve decided to share with you our ideas of what you should expect in innovation in the smart home in 2017 and the home automation industry as a whole.

During the past few years, we’ve managed to see a growing trend in the home automation industry. In fact, today some of the top manufacturers of different home appliances products have either created their own smart ecosystem or make home automation integration possible with already existing smart home systems. Whether you are going to buy a new stove, fridge or even a light bulb, chances are your better option will be to buy a smart home product.

The Problem of Connectivity and Integration in 2017

One of the biggest problems in the home automation industry has been the segmentation of different products. With everyone wanting to get a piece of the smart home pie, we’ve managed to see even the most unknown of faces create a hub device or a stand-alone smartphone application to control their products. However, that segregation by itself is what holds back so many home owners from upgrading their homes and making them more intelligent. Having multiple applications and different interfaces to get used to, resulted in significantly increased difficulty in the use of everyday devices, while ease and simplicity was considered to be the expected result. Nevertheless, as we’ve managed to see in 2016 and is expected to be seen in 2017 is the drawback from manufacturers from the creation of their own ecosystems and an approach of integration within proven and more reliable smart home ecosystems and hubs, already available on the market and used by smart home enthusiasts.

This expected trend was most notable at CES 2017, when most of the newly offered devices came Amazon Alexa integrated out of the box. While this doesn’t necessarily solve the problem for the Z-Wave DIY home automation enthusiasts, who prefer having things their own way, IFTTT integration is also something that manufacturers seem to understand the positive sides of. What’s more, we believe that the home automation industry will go even further in order to achieve a more seamless smart home experience for the homeowner, primarily by giving people wireless connectivity options and ecosystem-ready devices.

Lack of Innovation and Focus on Renovation and Upgrading

Another trend to be noted in already existing and upcoming 2017 devices is the fact that we won’t be able to see much innovation throughout the home automation industry. While on the surface this might not seem as a good thing, it nonetheless is needed, due to the fact that innovations in the technology have already surpassed the rate at which such technology is being implemented throughout the daily lives of people. That being said, we believe that this year will be a year in which manufacturers will rather focus on renovating and upgrading their already existing products, in order to be able to deliver the needed refreshments and to be able to get more of the existing smart home ecosystems and the possibilities offered by the technology we already have.

Is the Home Automation Industry Finally Headed in the Right Direction

When considering the fact that manufacturers are finally understanding the true values of building a proper smart home ecosystem and providing an openness in their products, we do believe that the home automation industry is finally headed towards the right direction.
